Brief profile
The Kuss Quartet transforms contemporary issues into art and is equally committed to innovation and the preservation of the repertoire with excellence.
“Routine is artistically fatal; novelty is vital” (Kuss Quartet)
A group of four independent musicians who form a strong team may be more resilient than soloists persuing their career as lone wolves – yet the string quartet, as a way of life and a social structure, is not necessarily any easier. The Kuss Quartet agrees that it requires a passion for the cause, a sense of human composure and plenty of energy.
In 1991, Oliver Wille and his fellow student Jana Kuss founded the ensemble at the School of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin; together with cellist Mikayel Hakhnazaryan and violist William Coleman, the ensemble will celebrate its 25th anniversary on stage in 2027.
The Kuss Quartet draws its strength equally from a love of experimentation and a commitment to tradition, from an openness to new formats and from an exploration of profound musicality. Concept albums, commissioned works, cross-genre formats and collaborations with artist collectives are among their hallmarks. All the while, they remain mindful of their connection to the core repertoire.
In 2026/27, the quartet will embark on a new three-part album project: all six of Mozart’s string quintets, combined with six miniatures by contemporary composers.
