„What a luxury to be able to make music together in this way“ – Antje Weithaas releases CD with works by Tchaikovsky

Violinist Antje Weithaas and the Camerata Bern recorded the Violin Concerto and the String Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor (arranged for string orchestra) by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky. “I wanted to record Tchaikovsky for several reasons. Most importantly, I love Tchaikovsky’s music, particularly the two works featured on this recording,” says Antje Weithaas, violinist and leader of the Camerata Bern. It was a risky venture to record the Violin Concerto without a conductor. “Such projects can only succeed when the soloists and the orchestra know one another very well, as is the case with myself and the Camerata,” explains Antje Weithaas. Being able to make music together in such an intimate atmosphere is „a luxury“.

With this recording, Antje Weithaas and the members of the Camerata Bern wanted to coax the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto out of the corner of virtuoso tradition because in certain aspects, an established way of playing seems to have become somewhat cemented over the last decades. “We all found it thrilling to challenge and question our previous experience with this piece, both as performers and as listeners, and to tackle it as if it was new to us.”

A new hearing experience will also be their interpretation of the String Quartet No. 3 in an own arrangement for string orchestra. “By adding the double bass part, the endless sadness, depth and darkness contained in this work acquire an additional dimension, and the larger forces employed throw light on the work’s symphonic character,” reveals Antje Weithaas.
