“Setting its own standards and principles” – The Schumann Quartet’s schedule and plans for the 2017/18 season

The Schumann Quartet has long ceased to be an insider tip: an ensemble that gives concerts in London’s Wigmore Hall, the Louvre in Paris, the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Berlin’s Philharmonie in just one season, as these four musicians will do, has already reached the top flight of the international music scene. But despite this, their concerts still always radiate the magic of youthful free-thinking, unbridled joy in crossing boundaries and unreserved curiosity when entering new musical territory. Along with this, the quartet possesses a unique presence and dynamic energy during its live performances.

The schedule for the 2017/18 season includes nearly 60 concert engagements for Erik, Ken (violins) and Mark (violoncello) Schumann and Liisa Randalu (viola). The foursome will be travelling and concertising virtually across Europe (for example Frankfurt, Dortmund, Hamburg, Barcelona, Florenz), interrupted by altogether three trips to the USA, during which the quartet will, among other things, fulfil the obligations attached to its three-year appointment as “Ensemble in Residence” of the Chamber Music Society in Lincoln Center in New York. But there is no need for concern that the breathtaking success story of this quartet, founded in 2007, will go to the still young musicians’ heads, if Erik Schumann’s words are to be judged by: “In an artistic regard, the quartet still has the very highest expectations of itself, or, to put it better: when we play, it is with complete dedication. We won’t ever completely be able to live up to our own expectations, but we consider it as an incentive that other experienced personalities believe in our potential.”
