Solistes Européens Luxembourg (SEL)

The Solistes Européens Luxembourg (SEL) gave their first concert on 20 September 1989 in Luxembourg. Since then, the best musicians from European orchestras have met regularly in Luxembourg to make music in this chamber ensemble. Its home venue is the Philharmonie, where all concerts are recorded for radio in Luxembourg. Since September 2010, Christoph König has been the musical director and principal conductor of the SEL.

The ensemble has already played to great acclaim in other major European cities such as Vienna, Bratislava, Cologne, Berlin, Paris and Lyon, and at numerous festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. In 2004, the orchestra even performed in New York.

The SEL has already recorded more than 120 CDs during the 28 years of its existence. In November 2017, its first recording on Rubicon Classics was released, with Beethoven‚Äôs ‚ÄúEroica‚ÄĚ and M√©hul‚Äôs 1st Symphony conducted by Christoph K√∂nig. The recording marks the start of what is projected to be a long collaboration with the label. In Germany, the album was on the 1/2018 longlist for the German Record Critics’ Award . The orchestra Solistes Europ√©ens has even made its way into the Top 10 of the ‚ÄúTop Classical of 2017‚ÄĚ Spotify playlist with its recording of √Čtienne-Nicolas M√©hul’s Symphony No.1.

Meanwhile the second album has been released featuring works by Berio and Schubert. Conductor Christoph K√∂nig and his orchestra also master this task in such a convincing fashion that the magazine Pizzicato gave them a Supersonic Award: ‚ÄúCrystal-clear and transparent. Christoph K√∂nig shapes the transitions in this hybrid work with great sensitivity; one has the impression of gliding back and forth in a dream between reality and fiction. A very eloquent and wonderfully-played recording that also fulfils the highest demands.‚ÄĚ

Luxembourg thus is and remains an important focus of the conducting activities of Christoph K√∂nig, whom the press has acclaimed for his ‚Äúprofound musicality and intelligence‚ÄĚIn the 2017/18 season, the concert series of the SEL, which traditionally takes place on Mondays. During the series, the SEL will be playing exciting programmes with internationally renowned soloists such as Carolin Widmann (15 October 2018), Gerhard Oppitz (26 November 2018), Martin Stadtfeld (18 March 2019) or Christoph Sietzen (29 April 2019).
